How to Use Sugar Crystals on Cookies

Decorating your sugar cookies for any occasion is a lot more fun with sugar crystals. Use a variety of colored crystals to add some pizazz to the sweet treats. Sugar crystals can be sprinkled on top of cookies, but there is a whole lot more you can do. Make the designs even more creative with stencils to create shapes, images and text for any occasion. Choose themed stencils, such as pumpkins for Halloween and balloons for birthdays.

Things You'll Need

  • Cookies
  • Frosting
  • Knife
  • Colored sugar crystals
  • Stencils
  • Toothpick
  • Frost your cookies with white frosting using a knife. The colored sugar crystals will show up better on a light frosting color.

  • Place your stencil of choice on top of the cookie while the frosting is still moist. Sift sugar crystals over the stencil to decorate the cookie. Don't let the sugar crystals to fall onto any part of the cookie that is not covered by the stencil.

  • Brush any additional sugar crystals on the stencil into the holes of the stencil. Carefully remove the stencil.

  • Fix any mistakes on the cookie. Use a toothpick to even out design edges and to guide any sugar crystal stragglers back to the design.
