How to Do Group Chat in Skype

Skype is a free application that supports Voice Over IP, or VOIP, voice calls, video chat and text chat through instant messaging. Voice calls can be computer-to-computer or computer-to-phone, either landline or mobile. You can have up to 25 participants in a voice conference call. Video chat requires that each participant have a Web camera, and supports up to 10 participants. Text chats allow up to 100 participants, and additional contacts can be easily added to the chat up to that maximum.

      Open Skype. Log in with your user name and password. Click a name from your contact list. Click the "Chat" button for the contact or right-click the contact and select "Start Chat." A chat window opens.

      Click "Add More People To This Chat." Highlight individual contacts in the "Choose Contacts" window and click "Add" or hold the "Ctrl" key and click on multiple contacts and click "Add."

      Highlight individual contacts or hold the "Ctrl" key and click multiple contacts in the "Chat Participants" window to remove contacts from the chat. To end a group chat, click the "Menu" button and click "Leave Chat."

Tips & Warnings

  • Skype group chats can have a topic, which appears at the top of the group chat window and is visible to all participants. To set a topic, click "Set Topic" from the chat menu and type a topic for the chat in the text field.
