How to Make a Dress Out of a White Sheet

Save

Everyone has extra bed sheets around their house. You can turn old or new sheets into a beautiful dress without much time or effort. Instead of going to the store to buy your next dress why not make a unique dress yourself. Not only does making a dress cost less, it will also be a great conversation piece. In a few simple steps you can have your own dress made out of something as simple as bed sheets.

Things You'll Need

  • White bed sheet
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Tape measure
  • Iron
  • Measure yourself. Take the measurements of your true waist, bust and hips. You can do your own measurements for this project because this is not a fitted dress. It is better to add inches to create a flowing fit. When you add a belt or tie it will define your waist and create a flowy look.

  • Select a white queen size bed sheet. You can either use a sheet you have around the house or purchase one that you would like as a dress. It is easier to use a top sheet for this project. If you choose to use a bottom sheet you will need a seem ripper to remove the elastic. Make sure the sheet you use is clean and ironed for best results.

  • Cut your sheet in half so there are now two equal halves. Use a sewing pencil to draw a pattern you would like on each half of the sheet based on your measurements. The most simple pattern would be to make a tube dress and then add straps. Be sure to take into account how long and flowing you want the dress to be. Cut along the pencil lines.

  • Sew the two pieces together. You can either use a sewing machine or do this by hand. Leave room for your arms. If you choose to make a tube dress, and are adding straps, be sure to make them long enough. Hem the bottom of your dress and any other cut edges.

  • Add a belt, ribbon or tie. You can use a belt or a ribbon you already have in your closet to finish the ensemble. You can also make a tie out of your bed sheet. Measure the length you would like the tie to be and cut a strap of fabric that amount. Be sure to hem all the edges of the tie to give it a nice finished look.
