Research the charity in question on a site such as Charity Navigator.com. These types of sites allow you to see historical data about a charity and find out what types of activities the organizations are involved in. Charity Navigator also breaks down organizational efficiency percentages, allowing you get a sense of exactly where that money will be going.

Contact the charity in question to find out where to send donations. Often charities will have specific addresses set up for this purpose.

Make a check or money order payable to the charity you have chosen. In the memo section write "In loving memory of" followed by the name of your deceased friend or loved-one. Mail the donation to the charity.
