South Carolina 2009 1040 Form Instructions
The South Carolina Department of Revenue is the agency responsible for collecting tax from income derived either by persons in South Carolina or by South Carolina residents. If you are a South Carolina resident or have worked in South Carolina, you must file a South Carolina income tax return. SC Form 1040 is the appropriate form for filing an individual South Carolina tax return.

Download and print a copy of SC Form 1040 from the South Carolina Department of Revenue's website (see Resources). The South Carolina Department of Revenue does not accept online filing. When printing, set page scaling to "None", check "Auto-Rotate and Center" and uncheck the "Choose Paper Source by PDF" box.

Provide your personal information in the first section. Provide your name, address and social security number. Provide the name and social security number of your spouse. Check the appropriate box to indicate your federal filing status. Check whether you are filing a Schedule NR, composite return, federal or state extension, have served in a military combat zone or have been affected by a federal disaster. Provide the name and social security number of any claimed dependents. Indicate the number of federal exemptions claimed.

Write in your federal taxable income on line 1. The amount of federal taxable income can be found on line 42 of Form 1040, line 27 of Form 1040A or line 6 of Form 1040EZ.

Write in any additions to your federal taxable income, including state tax addback, losses incurred outside of South Carolina, expenses pertaining to military income and interest income received outside of South Carolina. Indicate this total on Line 3.

Fill out part II. Indicate any subtractions or deductions listed from federal taxable income, which includes military tax credits, social security retirements and age deductions. Indicate the total of deductions on line 4.

Calculate the amount of South Carolina tax owed by checking your federal taxable income on the South Carolina tax table (see Resources). Indicate any additional tax on other income, including income from lump sum distributions, business income or catastrophe savings accounts and provide this total on line 10.

Write in any tax credits claimed. Indicate the appropriate deductions on lines 11 through 13, then perform the requested calculations on line 14 and 15. Indicate any payments and refundable credits claimed on lines 16 through 22, then provide the total on line 23. Perform the calculations requested in lines 23 through 34 to determine the balance owed to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

Sign and file SC Form 1040. If filing by mail, the address for filing SC Form 1040 varies by whether you owe a balance, have a zero balance or are owed a refund. The appropriate address is listed at the bottom of the SC Form 1040. You may also file online by creating an account with the South Carolina Department of Revenue's Electronic Payment System (see Resources).
