Donations of food help the homeless to survive.

There are those who argue that giving food to the homeless is not addressing the root cause of homelessness and only serves to keep people on the street. The crux of this argument is that if homeless people are supplied with food, they will have less incentive to take action to find housing. In reality, if it weren't for the work of soup kitchens and other philanthropic organizations that distribute donated food, the suffering of many homeless people would be worse. If you want to help provide homeless people with a square meal, there are a number ways you can solicit donations.

Instructions

    • 1

Approach supermarkets and local stores to ask if they would consider donating any products approaching or past their "sell by" or "best if used before" date but still inside their "use by" date. These are considered to be safe for human consumption but are regularly thrown away if not purchased by the date stated.

    • 2

Ask your local school or church to encourage people to donate food for you to distribute to the homeless in your area. You could also get local thrift stores involved or set up a drop-off point at your local mall.

    • 3

Develop strategic partnerships with local businesses to fund the purchase of food for the homeless. Smaller businesses such as restaurants and cafes could ask their customers to pay an extra $2 on top of the price their meal. You could ask larger companies to make a donation to fund a soup run. Businesses benefit from the positive PR they receive and may be able to take a tax deduction for their donation. Talk to your local charity office about the rules that would govern any such arrangement in your state. You may need to work with a locally registered organization.

Ask for food instead of presents at birthdays, Christmas and other celebrations. You can then either pass this directly to homeless people yourself or give it a local charity that can do so on your behalf.
