Instructions for Tying Sheer Ribbon Bow Ties

Instructions for Tying Sheer Ribbon Bow Ties thumbnail
Sheer bows are used to decorate many things.

Sheer ribbon bows are bows that can be a variety of colors, but made of a translucent material. Sometimes these types of bows have wires on the edges so that you can manipulate the shape of the bow and how the bow sits on an object. These bows are used to decorate gifts, wreaths, hanging ornaments and centerpieces. There are many ways to tie these types of bows; it all depends on what the purpose of the bow is.

Instructions

  1. Overhand Knot Bow

    • 1

Cut a length of ribbon. If you are tying the ribbon around a box, make sure you have too much ribbon rather than too little.

    • 2

Make two loops of sheer ribbon, one in each hand.

    • 3

Tie the ribbon in an overhand knot and pull together. Adjust as needed and cut the ends to size.

    Faux Knot Bow

    • 4

Cut two lengths of ribbon. One sheer ribbon should be 24 inches long and the other should be 5 to 7 inches long.

    • 5

Divide the long ribbon into thirds in your head with the center section being shorter than the ends. Do not make any marks on the ribbon. Fold the ends of the ribbon under the center section of the ribbon, crossing the ends of the ribbon so that the right side of the ribbon comes out under the left side of the bow, and the left side of the ribbon comes out under the right side of the bow.

    • 6

Fold the short length of ribbon in thirds and glue down the sides with the hot glue gun. Allow the hot glue to dry.

    • 7

Wrap the short length of ribbon around the center of the long piece of folded ribbon to make a bow out of the folded ribbon. Tie the short ribbon snugly on the back of the long piece of ribbon.

    • 8

Snip off the ends of the short ribbon and glue the short knot in place with the hot glue. Cut the ends of the long ribbon to size as desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • The overhand knot bow is predominately used when wrapping gifts and packages, while the faux knot bow is used when the bow will be placed on wreaths, hanging garlands and centerpieces.

  • Exercise caution when using a hot glue gun and scissors. Failure to use caution may result in severe burns and cuts.
