1
Practice singing and humming scales. This will warm up your voice and give you an accurate representation of the limits of your voice during key selection.
-
2
Choose a song. If you are working with an accompanist and would like to find the key that fits in your range best, use the song that you will be performing.
-
-
3
Instruct your accompanist to begin playing the song in the key that it's originally written.
-
4
Sing through the song, paying careful attention to how you feel when the note range of the song increases. If you find yourself straining or your voice hurting when singing certain notes, then you will need to bring the song down.
If you can sing the higher notes easily, but have trouble fully hitting the lower notes, you will need to raise the song.
-
5
Tell your accompanist to raise or lower the song key by a half step depending on your need. Sing through the song again. Ask yourself: Does it fit well within my range? Am I trying too hard to hit these notes?
If necessary, ask your accompanist to raise or lower the key again.
-
6
Sing through the song in a variety of keys until you find the one that allows you to hit the most notes as easily as possible. The ideal key will allow you to show off your lower and upper registers without having to force your voice.
