How to Export Rhino 3D to Maya

Rhino 3D and Maya are different computer graphic/animation programs, and each has various strengths and weaknesses. Whether you are upgrading your software or simply want to use Rhino's design features and Maya's rendering, you may need to transfer files from one to the other. There are several complicated methods for doing this, but with recent versions the key to doing it simply is the IGES file type.

  • Open the object you want to export into Rhino 3D. Select "Save as" and in the dialogue box that appears, choose to save as an IGES (.igs) file type.

  • Close Rhino 3D and open up Maya. Create a new project. Activate the IGES plug-in by going to Menu > Window > Settings/Preferences > Plug-in Manager and enabling the two "Iges.mll" check boxes.

  • Select Menu > File > Open and select the IGES file you saved from Rhino. If the imported object looks to be a bit of a mess, open the Outliner and select and delete the different geometry nodes, except for groups.
