How to Format the Mailing Address on an Envelope

In the United States, you must properly address an envelope to ensure the mail carrier will deliver it to the proper home or business. There is a format you must follow on an envelope including the order you write the address in as well as the placement. Make sure you use a dark utensil and clear handwriting when labeling an envelope. Also remember to pay the proper postage on the item.

Instructions

1. Write the address in the middle front of the envelope.

2. Start with the name of the recipient. Address it with "Mr.," "Mrs." or "Miss," if applicable.

3. Write the building number and street on the second line of the envelope.

4. Write the city, state abbreviation and zip code on the last line.

Tips & Warnings

• Include a return address in the same format on the top left corner of the envelope or the area labeled as "from" on the back middle of the envelope.
