How to Drink Water and Mustard Powder

How to Drink Water and Mustard Powder thumbnail
Mustard powder mixed with warm water is a homemade emetic.

Most people do not induce emesis, or vomiting, unless they have a compelling reason to do so. Vomiting may be necessary, however, for removing a poisonous or irritating substance from the stomach. Although there are several methods for causing emesis, drinking water and mustard powder is quite effective. Mustard powder works by irritating the gastric tissues, which stimulate the vomiting center in the stomach, according to "Medical Botany: Plants Affecting Human Health."

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a glass with about 8 oz. of warm water. The water should be warm enough to dissolve the mustard powder but not so warm that you can't drink it.

    • 2

Measure 1 tsp. of dried mustard powder and add it to the water. Stir the mixture until the powder dissolves completely.

    • 3

Drink the mixture immediately, and at a steady pace. Do not sip it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If it's effective, the mixture will induce vomiting in about 15 minutes. If it doesn't work within 15 minutes, you may need to try another method.

  • If you want to induce emesis because you ingested a toxic substance, call a doctor immediately, before causing yourself to vomit. Depending on the substance, inducing vomiting may not be the proper course of action to take.
