Avoid picking or biting your nails or the skin surrounding your nails, as this will prevent growth and also cause roughness around your fingers. Also avoid using your nails to work on tough surfaces or as tools to dig or scrape, which causes damage to your nails.

Clean your nails thoroughly each day when bathing to prevent bacteria, dirt and oils from getting trapped in between your finger and fingernail. Dry your fingers and hands thoroughly after bathing as well to decrease the chance of bacteria growth under your nails.

File thick areas of your fingernails and trim them regularly by using nail clipper or nail scissors and trimming straight across the nail. File and cut your nails after bathing to allow easier trimming due to softened and soaked nails.

Moisturize your nails and hands with a moisturizing skin lotion to help keep your nails and hand appearance beautiful and soft.

Add almonds to your diet. Almonds contain a fatty acid that is great for your nails. Eating just six almonds per day alone will help with fingernail growth.

Use colored nail polish on your fingernails to allow yourself to be more aware of your fingers and nails -- and to better care for them. Wear plastic or rubber waterproof gloves when working with water for extended periods of time to prevent chipping of nail polish and drying of the skin.
