How to Get Genealogy Testing
A person's DNA helps scientists and genealogists connect families across the world. DNA provides information on an individual's origins through an easy cheek-swab test. Three types of genealogy DNA testing are available: the Paternal Lineage DNA Test, the Maternal Lineage DNA Test and the Paternal & Maternal Lineage DNA test. Each test has a different price and provides different information from the others. Individuals can participate in testing through a couple of services.

Choose a company that provides DNA testing and a test. Ancestry.com, a large genealogy research company, has three test options available. All three tests will provide information on an individual's ancestors but do not provide race and origin breakdowns or ethnic breakdowns.
The Paternal Lineage DNA test reveals genetic cousin relationships and is given only to males. This test examines the DNA passed down from male to male. The Maternal Lineage DNA test examines the DNA passed down from mother to child and is given to both females and males. The Paternal & Maternal Lineage DNA test provides results from both the tests and is only given to males.

Order the test kit online. When it arrives take the cheek-swab test. Most genealogy DNA testing kits contain multiple swabs, all which should be used and returned. Enclose the swabs in the return envelope and mail. Results will be mailed to you.

Read the DNA results when you receive them. Review the results against other results in Ancestry.com's online databases. Reports can be created and printed comparing your DNA to others around the world allowing you to make new connections. Share the information through message boards to locate additional family members.
