How to Use Windows XP Blue Screen Codes

When Windows XP experiences a serious problem, it will lock up the computer and display a Stop error screen--colloquially known as the "Blue Screen of Death." There are many types of Stop errors, all of which are assigned individual hexadecimal codes. Using this code, and any other information the error screen provides, you can look up up-to-date troubleshooting information on Microsoft's website.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down both the hexadecimal code for the Stop error (the long number looking something like "0x0000007E") and the text description of the error, if one exists. Also note any additional information the error screen contains about drivers, memory locations or files.

    • 2

Go to Microsoft's Support website (see Resources), enter the hexadecimal code into the search bar at the top and press "Enter."

    • 3

Click the "Troubleshooting a Stop error" result and follow Microsoft's instructions. If no useful results appear, try another search for the error's text description. If you still get nothing, go to the Kadaitcha webpage (see Resources), which contains a comprehensive list of Stop errors and links to instructions on resolving them.
