How do I Pull a 9K Trailer With a Chevy 2500 HD?

Chevrolet pickup trucks are rated for a maximum trailer weight. This maximum weight depends on factors like the model, engine size and optional packages that can mitigate the extra weight. All post-break in Chevy 2500 HDs can pull a 9,000 lbs trailer---many 1500 models can't. Pulling a trailer affects the 2500 HD's handling, acceleration, braking and durability.

Instructions

    • 1

Weigh the vehicle with the trailer; trailer tongue, hitch or fifth-wheel gooseneck; gear and passengers to be sure that you aren't exceeding the GCWR---the Gross Combination Weight Rating. The GCWR is different from the maximum trailer weight rating because it includes everything. For example, the 2500 HD extended cab can tow 9,800 lbs, but the GCWR mustn't exceed 16,000 lbs.

Inflate the 2500's tires to the levels recommended on the driver's side door label before hooking up the trailer.

    • 3

Attach safety chains between the vehicle and trailer by crossing the safety chains under the tongue of the trailer. Attach them to the holes on the hitch platform, not the bumper. Allow some slack, so the 2500 can turn. Connect the trailer braking, which is required to be independent on a trailer of this weight; and any trailer electrical wiring harnesses.

Press the "Tow/Haul" button at the end of the gear shift lever and verify that the "Tow/Haul" light illuminates in the instrument cluster.
