How to Become a Biological Technical Writer

Biological technical writers focus on the biology field, such as research papers, trade articles, scientific marketing and grant writing. A biological technical writer needs to have extensive experience in his subject matter, along with experience in technical writing tools.

1. Major in a biological field or have extensive experience in a particular field of biology. Scientific technical writing jobs often require at least a four-year degree in the biology field. Higher degrees are sometimes required for technical writing on specialized biology topics. If possible, minor in technical communication, technical writing or English. If a minor is not offered, take as many technical writing classes as possible to get used to the formats and software used.

2. Practice breaking down complicated biological concepts into easy-to-understand format. Technical writers are used for manuals, operating procedures, product guides and even marketing materials. You need to be able to convey complex ideas to a variety of audiences, from salespeople to engineers.

3. Apply for jobs at government agencies, research facilities, scientific journals and publishers and consulting firms. Biological technical writing jobs are either full-time, part-time or freelance, and the type of projects differ from job to job.
