How to Remove the Clutch Master Cylinder on a 3000GT

The 3000GT's clutch sits inside a pressure plate.

The Mitsubishi 3000GT's clutch system uses hydraulic pressure to engage and disengage the clutch. This system consists of three main components: clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder and hydraulic lines. The clutch master cylinder holds the DOT3 brake fluid used as as the hydraulic fluid and creates the hydraulic pressure needed to activate the clutch. As the master cylinder ages, the internal seals may begin to wear out causing the clutch to not operate properly. When this occurs, the clutch master cylinder must be removed and rebuilt or replaced.

Things You'll Need

• Turkey baster
• Small container
• Drain pan
• Line wrench set
• Ratchet
• Socket set

Instructions

1. Open the 3000GT's hood and locate the clutch master cylinder. It is slightly below the brake master cylinder on the vehicle's firewall. Open the clutch master cylinder's lid and remove all of the fluid using a turkey baster and transfer that fluid to a small container.

2. Slide a drain pan under the vehicle and under the clutch master cylinder.

3. Loosen and remove the hard metal line connecting to the master cylinder, using a line wrench.

4. Open the driver's side door and slide the driver's seat all the way back. Trace the clutch pedal stalk upward until you find where it connects to the shaft from the clutch master cylinder. Pull the retaining pin from the clevis pin---the pin holding the shaft to the clutch pedal stalk. Pull the clevis pin from the shaft and the clutch pedal stalk.

5. Trace the clutch master cylinder shaft toward the firewall and locate the two nuts holding the clutch master cylinder. Loosen and remove these nuts. Close the driver's side door.

6. Grab the clutch master cylinder from under the hood and pull it from the vehicle.
