Gumballs come in assorted flavors.

Gumball machines are one of the lowest tiers of vending machines, but that doesn't mean they're not profitable. Compared to other vending machines, such as snack and drink machines, gumball machines require little investment and have the chance for a big payoff. While one machine isn't going to make you rich, having a route full of gumball machines will probably bring in a steady income.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose secure, operational and aesthetic machines. Your gumball machines should have shatterproof glass for security and safety purposes. The machines should also work without fault, which typically isn't a problem if you're buying them new. If you're buying used machines, test them out to make sure the gumballs dispense and the coin mechanism works. Look for machines that are pleasing to the eye. A clunky, round globe without any color isn't likely to attract any attention.

Select the type of gumballs you will use in your machine. Gumballs come in different shapes and sizes, just like machines, but they also come in different flavors. If you're placing several machines in one location, you can place one flavor in each machine; otherwise stick to assorted flavors. Do not mix and match types of gumballs, such as mixing sour gumballs and with normal ones.

Look for a location. Drive around to different businesses and look for opportune locations. Seek out high traffic areas, such as laundromats and restaurants. Keep your eye out for locations that see a lot of young children and teenagers as well, such as toy stores and dollar stores.

    • 4

Secure the location. Tell the business owner or manager that you own a vending business and you would like to place a gumball machine in his business. Explain that the machine is beneficial to him, because a gumball machine can attract attention to the business and add a little flare. Explain that there are no costs associated with placing the gumball machine.

    • 5

Stock the machines. Don't let your machines run out of gumballs, otherwise you will hurt your profits. Visit each location three or four times during the course of the first month; afterward, you will have an idea of how often you need to stock the machine. Some machines may need to be stocked every two weeks, while others can go three months without being touched.

Tips & Warnings

  • Compensating the business owner or manager is usually per the course when attempting to secure locations for vending machines. However, gumball machines do not bring in the profit other machines do, so it's not advantageous for you to offer any sort of compensation. If the owner or manager asks for a share of the profit, explain that the machine will likely only make $5 to $15 or even less a month.

  • Unless you plan on placing the machine on a counter top, you will need a stand.

  • Many gumball machines come as single-, double- or triple-head machines. Do not purchases double- or triple-head machines unless you are placing the machine in a consistently high traffic areas.

  • Avoid placing your machine outside. Unlike drink and snack machines, gumball machines aren't heavy enough to deter thieves from stealing them.
