Add a dash of performance to your Volvo sedan with a few bolt-on modifications.

Successor to the popular 960 series, the S80 was an all new model for Volvo, first arriving at dealerships in 1998. Available exclusively in sedan form, the S80 includes a high level of standard equipment, and luxurious interior designed to compete with upscale sedans, such as those offered by front runners BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Volvo offered the S80 with a myriad of engine options, including a 2.4-liter straight-five producing 168 horsepower, a force fed twin-turbo 6-cylinder model that developed a peak of 268 horsepower and even a V-8 on newer editions. Tuners quickly learned these engines could be modified for greater performance with a series of basic upgrades.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a drop-in replacement filter into the factory air filter to increase flow to the engine, while maintaining a completely stock appearance. This upgrade will yield even larger gains on S80 models equipped with a turbocharger, as it allows for quicker spool-up times.

    • 2

Replace the restrictive factory exhaust with an aftermarket unit designed to relieve back-pressure, and allow spent gases to escape faster. On turbo models it is recommended to replace the entire exhaust system, from the turbine housing to the muffler, to maximize gains

    • 3

Reprogram the engine control unit, not only to enhance the effectiveness of all modifications, but also to update the conservative timing and fuel maps set at the factory.

    • 4

Add a big brake kit, consisting of larger diameter rotors and high-performance pads, to minimize the instances of brake fade, and significantly enhance stopping power.

    • 5

Install a set of strut tower brace bars to improve the vehicle's handling and allow for more direct steering inputs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a vehicle dynamometer to gain a detailed analysis of engine output.

  • Modifying your S80 can void your warranty and cause damage to critical components. If in doubt, consult your Volvo dealer or the manufacturer directly.
