How to Format Citations With APA

The American Psychological Association has come up with a set of formatting standards to be used when publishing papers in APA journals. These standards included specific rules for formatting citations, known as a reference list. The APA standard is also used in schools for term papers as well as the business environment to ensure precision in writing and communication.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the list alphabetically by the author's last name. If the work has no author, list it alphabetically by the title of the work.

    • 2

Start each entry with the author's last name, followed by their first name's initial and a period. Use an ampersand when listing multiple authors.

    • 3

Write the year the work was published in parenthesis, followed by a period.

    • 4

Write the title of the work in italics, capitalizing only the first word and any proper nouns, followed by a period.

    • 5

Write the page numbers the cited work is found if it is part of a periodical or encyclopedia. Write the page numbers in parenthesis with "p." or "pp." before the numbers.

    • 6

Write the edition of the book in parenthesis, if it is later than the first edition, followed by a period.

    • 7

Write the city the work was published in, followed by a colon and the publishing company.

    • 8

Add an Internet address preceded by "Retrieved from" if the work is published online.

    • 9

Indent the second and any additional lines of all entries 1/2 inch.
