Watch your cat's behavior in the room in question. If it stays around an area sniffing the carpet closely, there's a good chance that it's a urine spot. Cats often go back to the same area to relieve themselves over and over again.

Check for yellow or brown stains on the walls and by doors and windows. Male cats mark their territory by "spraying," which can easily reach furniture and walls. Female cats can do this as well, but generally prefer a squatting position.

Purchase or borrow a small black light. Turn off the lights in the room in question and examine the carpet and walls. According to the Pet Place website, black lights are an effective way to find where a cat has relieved itself.

Pull up a corner of your carpet and check for stains on the padding. If carpet is especially plush or deep, stains might be more visible from underneath.

According to Pet Place, using pheromone spray (available at many pet supply stores) on an area might be the most effective way to keep cats from spraying or urinating there.
Never use ammonia-based cleaning products to remove cat urine. This often attracts cats right back to the same place to urinate there again.
