How to Troubleshoot a Caterpillar 3208 Marine Engine

A Caterpillar 3208 is a large, 8-cylinder, diesel marine engine with many components. Caterpillar is one of the marine industry's leading manufacturers of medium and high-speed marine diesel engines. As with most engines with multiple moving parts, many components wear out over time. Do a little basic preventive maintenance before calling in a Caterpillar mechanic. Problems could include overheating, excessive engine vibration and loose belts.

Instructions

1. Check the tension on all the belts if the engine is vibrating excessively or overheating. Remove the belt guard and check the condition and tension of the alternator belt. Slightly loosen the mounting bolt and three adjusting bolts. The mounting bolt holds the alternator to the engine. The adjustment bolts, when removed, allow the belt to be tightened by sliding the alternator away from the wheels. Tighten all the bolts once the desired tension has been reached. Reinstall the belt guard. When installing new belts, check the belt tension again after 30 minutes of engine operation.

2. Check the battery electrolyte level. Remove the filler caps. If the electrolyte level is below the "Full" mark, top off the battery with distilled water. Brush any corrosion from the battery terminals and clamps with a soft wire brush. Clean the battery in a solution of water and baking soda if it is dirty. Use 0.1 liter of baking soda to 1 liter of water. Rinse the battery case with clean water. Coat the clamps and terminals with a small amount of petroleum jelly.

3. Flush the cooling system if the engine tends to overheat and you notice foaming. Turn off the engine and allow the engine to cool before flushing. Remove the cooling system filler cap. Do this slowly, as there may be pressure buildup in the system. Remove the drain plugs, and allow the coolant to drain. Flush the system with clean water. Clean the drain plug before replacing it. Fill the system with a mixture of clean water and Caterpillar fast-acting cooling system cleaner. Replace the filler cap. Run the engine at a low idle for approximately 30 minutes to check for overheating. If the engine continues to overheat, have a qualified Caterpillar marine mechanic investigate further.

4. Inspect the crankshaft vibration damper for cracks or damage if the engine vibrates excessively. Too much vibration can cause damage to the crankshaft and other engine components. The damper is a rubber ring mounted to the crankshaft to reduce vibration. It is located behind the belt guard on the front of the engine. Have a Caterpillar marine mechanic replace the damper if it is damaged.

5. Clean the air filter if the engine is not responding correctly. Remove the air filter cover and filter. Wipe the inside of the air filter housing with a dry, clean cloth. Wash the filter in warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse the filter. Reinstall the filter and filter cover. Replace the filter if it is damaged.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not use tap water in the battery.

• When cleaning the battery terminals, brush them until they are shiny. Do not remove excessive material, as this can cause problems when refitting the clamps.
