How to Decorate a Home Media Room
Many homes include a media room now, as homes have gotten larger and home entertainment has become more sophisticated with the advancement of technology. Your media room will likely become one of the main rooms used by the family, because this space is commonly used to entertain friends and family, watch TV or movies, study, or simply hang out. Paint the walls or put up wallpaper that sets the mood for the main purpose of your media room. Darker colors -- such as navy blue, burgundy or chocolate brown -- work best in a room primarily used as a home theater. Lighter colors -- such as white or pastel shades -- will brighten a room typically used for studying, reading, or playing games in addition to watching TV. Brighter colors are best in an active room, while subdued colors are best if you plan to use the room for studying and reading.

Arrange the furniture to make the best use of the space according to the activities you plan on doing in the media room. A TV and entertainment center should be the center of attention, with plenty of comfortable seating situated around it. Add bookshelves behind the sofas and chairs or around the media center if the room doubles as a library or study. Include a desk or large table for crafts, studying or games, if applicable.

Install your media equipment, such as the TV, surround sound and other electronics, in an attractive manner. Hide the cords and make the electronics as unobtrusive as possible. Use an armoire or cover the TV with curtains or in another manner if you don't want it to be visible when not in use.

Hang pictures, posters, sculptures or other decor on the walls. Use images, colors and shapes that contribute to the look and feel of the media room. If you're a huge fan of classic movies, frame posters from your favorites. Accessorize your media room with comfortable pillows, throws and other colorful items that add to the comfort in the room. Incorporate decorative baskets or bins that complement the room's decor and hold your DVDs, extra cords or other media equipment. Plants, vases, candles and other items will add ambiance, as well.
