How to Install an AFE Intake

How to Install an AFE Intake thumbnail
An AFE intake offers multiple benefits over the factory intake system.

An aftermarket intake can improve engine performance in a number of ways, including better power output and fuel efficiency. The exact installation method will vary slightly from one vehicle to the next, but all AFE intakes install using a similar process. The existing air system will be removed entirely to make room for the new intake. Each AFE intake is designed with one make and model of vehicle in mind, so make sure the intake you purchase is compatible with your vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the airflow sensor and VSV valve. Depending on your vehicle, these items will be located either on top of the air box, or on the side of the intake pipe. You can locate them by following the only wires that connect to the intake system. Unscrew each of these items with a screw driver and pull them out of the intake. Pull off the rubber vacuum hose connected to the bottom of the air intake tube.

    • 2

Loosen the clamp holding the air tube to the throttle body. Use a screwdriver to back out the screw on the hose clamp until the tube is loose enough to pull off. Leave the other end of the tube connected to the air box.

    • 3

Remove the lid from the air box. Depending on your vehicle model, it may be held on with bolts or screws. Use a socket wrench or screwdriver to remove them, then pull the lid off. Take the air filter out and remove the bolts at the bottom of the air box. Remove the air box.

    • 4

Place the AFE intake's coupling around the throttle body. Turn the screw clockwise using a screwdriver. Firmly tighten it around the throttle body opening.

    • 5

Install the airflow sensor and VSV valve that were removed from the old intake system. Place each item into the corresponding slot on top of the new intake. They will only fit in one direction, so if you encounter resistance, rotate the item and try again. Using a screwdriver, install the screws that were previously removed. Push the rubber vacuum line over the protruding tube at the bottom of the intake.

    • 6

Insert the cone air filter over the end of the AFE intake. Tighten the metal hose clamp with a screwdriver.
