How to Figure Postage on eBay

The online auction site -- eBay -- allows buyers and sellers of new, refurbished and used merchandise to exchange goods for money. Each item has a unique item number and product description. The product description includes a shipping method and a location of the item being sold. Calculating the postage costs for an eBay item requires the assistance of a shipping calculator, and the location of the shipper and buyer.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the weight of the eBay item you are selling. Product descriptions on manufacturer websites often contain the exact item weight.

    • 2

Locate the city, state and country of the item on the right-side of the product listing, next to "Item Location." Look up the ZIP code of the item location using the United State Postal Service's "Zip Code Lookup" page (see Resources). Sellers usually access the customer's address under "Order Details" on your "My Ebay" page.

    • 3

Visit the USPS "Postage Price Calculator" (see resources). Select the destination to which the product is traveling. Enter "To" and "From" ZIP codes.

    • 4

Enter the mailing date and the service. Sellers select parcel post, first class, express or priority shipping. Buyers approximate the postage based on the shipping method offered by the seller on the product description page. For example, if the seller lists the shipping method as "two to three days priority shipping," then select "Priority Shipping" on the USPS postage-price calculator. Click 'Continue" to finish the calculation.

    • 5

Look for the "Post Office Price" or "Paid Online" price in the right-hand columns of the USPS postage-price calculator page. Prices vary based on weight, shipping service and package size.
