How to Upload a Template
When running a website, there are countless platforms one can use such as Wordpress, Blogger or Joomla. With the ability to customize by using HTML and CSS, these three platforms are some of the most commonly used. They allow the user to blog, update regularly and interact with their visitors. However, to make a new website really stand out, the user must use a theme, template or layout that fits the content on their site.
Instructions
-
Adding a New Theme to Wordpress
-
1
Log into your Wordpress account using your admin user name and password. Once you're logged in, you'll be sent to your dashboard.
-
2
Click on "Appearance" in the left-hand menu and then "Themes." On the "Themes" page you'll notice a list of themes you currently have access to as they've already been installed, as well as a search function to find new themes or an option to browse your computer.
-
-
3
Click on the "Browse" button to search your computer for a theme you may have downloaded earlier. In most cases, these downloaded themes are saved to your "Downloads" folder. The themes you upload will be saved in .zip folders (compressed files).
-
4
Select the folder of the theme you'd like to upload and click "okay." Once the files finish uploading and decompressing, click on the "Activate" link to set the theme you just uploaded as the new theme for your website.
Adding a New Template to Blogger
-
5
Log into Blogger using your Gmail account. Once logged in, you'll be sent to a page with your user profile and all of the blogs you have access to.
-
6
Select the blog you'd like to edit and click on the "Design" link beside it. At the top of the next page in the upper left-hand corner, you'll see a set of links. Click on the one that says "Edit HTML" to start uploading a new template.
-
7
Backup your current template by clicking on the "Download Full Template" link under the "Backup/Restore Template" heading. Once your old template is saved to your hard drive, it's time to upload a new one.
-
8
Click on the "Browse" button to search your computer for a new template you may have downloaded. Note, unlike Wordpress, Blogger doesn't accept compressed .zip files. So if the file your downloaded is saved in a .zip folder, extract the files to your desktop first. The file you want to upload to Blogger should look like this: "themename.xml." These are the only files the Blogger uploader will accept.
-
9
Click "Okay" so Blogger can upload and install the file. When asked if you'd like to keep or remove your widgets, say "Keep." You may now save your blog settings and view your new template. If you want to change back to your old template, locate the file you downloaded from Blogger earlier and reinstall it.
Installing Joomla Templates
-
10
Log into your Joomla account using your name and password. Once on your dashboard, click on the "Extensions" link at the top of the page and then "Install/Uninstall" from the drop down menu.
-
11
Make sure the "Install" option is selected in the next page. Then, click on the "Browse" button to locate the template on your computer. Joomla files have a .zip extension similar to Wordpress themes. Find the .zip file or folder and click "Okay."
-
12
Click on the "Upload & Install File" button once you've made your selection. This installation will override your existing files, but you can change it back by reinstalling your old template if you're unhappy with the new one.
-
13
Save your settings and view your website. Make any necessary changes you like by changing the template's coding or by uploading a new one.
