Instructions for LR3 Trailer Wiring Kit
Land Rover products are justly renowned for off-road prowess coupled with a luxurious standard of interior appointment. The Land Rover 3, or LR3, replaced the Discovery in model year 2005 and is cited by the manufacturer as capable of towing 7,700-pounds -- a capable workhorse. A dedicated tow hitch connection harness is available from Land Rover, and numerous clone versions are sold by aftermarket companies. The connection harnesses are "plug and play," meaning no tools or expertise are necessary for their installation.

1
Locate the securing screw which holds the driver's side rear trim panel in place beneath the speaker in the cargo bay. Flick off the screw cap then use a screwdriver to remove the screw and lift the trim panel away to reveal the back of the left rear light cluster.
-
2
Identify the four-receiver round outlet left by Land Rover for the connection of a trailer wiring kit. Insert the matching four-pin connector of the connection harness.
-
-
3
Lift out the round rubber bung sealing a hole in the floor panel close by the location of the round plug. Use scissors to cut a small "V"-shaped opening in the plug, pass the connection harness through the new opening then reinstate the bung.
-
4
Route the connection harness to the location of the trailer tow package. Remove slack by pulling the harness back into the space behind the trim panel until slight resistance is felt, then use plastic cable ties to hold the harness where it cannot contact hot or moving parts. Replace the trim panel.

Tips & Warnings
Land Rover depart from the standard color coding used in the United States for trailer hitch wiring. The 12-volt hot wire is ten- or eight-gauge orange, not black, and the backup lights are green/brown pinstripe, not purple.
A red/yellow pinstripe wire is loose in the area behind the trim panel. This wire is for the installation of rear fog lamps, and is not involved in this project.
The LR3 features an in-dash "Tow Mode" icon which blinks when a trailer is connected. This icon may not work with certain non-Land Rover aftermarket harnesses.
