Pflueger Bait Casting reels are designed for light to mid-weight fishing. The reels use aluminum and titanium housings, aluminum spools and a series of stainless steel bearings housed in a round cartridge. Pflueger uses a magnetic pad to help control casting speeds and distances. Because the bearings and magnet are subjected to repetitive movements, they wear out. When these wear, out the reel needs to be repaired. With replacement parts available through Pflueger, take the time to fix the reel and get it back to near-original quality.
Things You'll Need
- Replacement bearing cartridge
- Light machine oil
- Replacement reel magnet - from Pflueger
- Small screwdriver
Unscrew the handle from the reel. Unscrew the two retaining screw at the housing, one on top and one on the bottom. Once the screws are removed, lift the housing off the reel.
Push the flat head tip of the screwdriver between the spool and the cartridge bearing cylinder. This is located on the right hand side of the spool. Gently pry the cartridge off the spool. Inspect the bearings for rust or worn sides. If either is present, discard the old cartridge and press a new cartridge into place.
Move to the handle side of the reel and locate the cast bail button. On the left side, locate the small magnetic plate. Pry the magnetic plate from the reel and replace it with the new plate.
Place the housing back onto the reel and add a drop of light machine oil to each screw housing. Screw the housing back onto the reel. Screw the handle back onto the reel and add a drop of light machine oil to the reel screw.
Place the reel into neutral and turn the reel to test the handle and reel mechanisms.
