How to Upgrade to a Maverick 88 Shotgun

Save

The Maverick 88 shotgun is produced by Mossberg. There are two models of the Maverick 88: a six-shot model and an eight-shot model. Upgrading either one is a simple process. Many of the accessories for the Mossberg 500 are also compatible with the Maverick 88.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-inch hex head wrench
  • Phillips head screw driver
  • Choke wrench

Upgrading the Choke

  • Remove the existing choke. Upgrading or changing the choke tube is the easiest and most common upgrade. Using your choke tube wrench, remove any existing choke by turning it counter-clockwise.

  • Select your new choke: Chokes for the Mossberg 500 series are also compatible with the Maverick 88. They range from full chokes to modified, or turkey, chokes.

  • Install the new choke. Using the choke tube wrench, tighten the choke into the barrel by turning it clockwise.

Upgrading the Barrel.

  • Remove the old barrel. Loosen the take-down screw at the end of the magazine. Turn it counter-clockwise until it is disengaged from the tube assembly.

  • Lift the barrel out. Rotate the barrel back and forth until it is loose and can be lifted from the receiver.

  • Install the new barrel. Insert the barrel into the receiver and tighten the take-down screw, turning it clockwise. Mossberg 500 barrels are compatible with the Maverick 88. There are a variety of barrel lengths, ranging from 18.5 inches to 28 inches. You also have options for standard shot barrels, rifled barrels for slugs or even a muzzle-loading conversion kit, which can turn your shotgun into a .50-caliber muzzle loader.

Upgrading the Stock.

  • Remove the recoil plate. Using the Phillips head screwdriver, loosen the top recoil pad screw. Loosen and remove the bottom recoil pad screw.

  • Remove the butt stock. Rotate the recoil pad, exposing the stock bolt head. Using the 1/2-inch hex wrench, loosen and remove the stock bolt and the stock.

  • Install the replacement stock. There are a number of stocks available to upgrade the Maverick 88. Wood stocks, synthetic camouflage stocks, tactical stocks and thumb-hole stocks are available. The stock can also be completely replaced with just a pistol grip.
