How to Clean Floor Tile & Grout With a Machine

One of the easiest ways to clean a heavily soiled tile floor is with a tile and grout machine. Its scrubbing brushes apply the elbow grease for you and significantly cut down on cleaning time. There are two basic types of tile and grout scrubbers available for purchase or hire at most home and garden centers. Simple floor scrubbers simply provide scrubbing power. You have to apply and remove the cleaning solution yourself. Fully automated scrubbers dispense solution and vacuum waste water.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor cleaning solution
  • Scrub brush
  • Bucket
  • Wet vac
  • Sweep or dust mop the floor to remove surface dirt and debris.

  • Dilute a floor cleaner designed for use with floor scrubbers in cool water. If at all possible, use the product recommended by your tile and grout scrubbing machine.

  • Pour the solution onto a roughly 10-square-foot area of the floor so that the tile and grout are saturated. If your machine is fully automated, pour the diluted solution into the machine's reservoir according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Leave the solution to soak for five to 10 minutes. Do not let the floor dry out during this time. Apply more cleaner if necessary. If your floor scrubber is fully automated, skip this step.

  • Place the scrubber on the tile floor. Plug it in and engage the scrubbers. Push the scrubber back and forth over small areas until the area is clean.

  • Vacuum up the cleaning fluid with a wet vac. If your floor scrubber is fully automated, set the machine to waste water pickup and vacuum the water into the machine's recovery tank.

  • Scrub the rest of the floor in 10-square-foot sections following Steps 2 through 5 until the majority of the floor has been cleaned.

  • Scrub the areas of the floor that the tile scrubber cannot reach--such as near walls and around fixtures--with a scrub brush. Apply the solution and allow it to soak as described above. Scrub with the brush and lift the used water with a wet vac or rag.

  • Rinse the floor. Mop with a bucket filled with clean water and a clean mop. Empty the bucket frequently and continue to mop until the water in the bucket remains clear. If your floor scrubber is fully automated, fill the reservoir with clean water and set the machine to rinse following the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Allow the floor to air dry.

  • Re-clean if necessary.
