There are no hard-and-fast rules for how a mommy-to-be should dress at her baby shower. It's her day, after all, and she's pregnant, so she gets to wear what she likes and feels comfortable in. Traditionally, the expectant mom wore a dress and possibly heels, but this is by no means the only appropriate choice nowadays. Many expectant moms wear dress slacks or even jeans to their showers -- it all depends on where the shower's being held, who's giving it and the mom's preferences.
Choose a long party dress, or better yet, an elegant floor-length maxi, for a shower that's on the formal side. The mom-to-be might choose a dress in a solid pastel that flatters her coloring, or a slimming black for a more sophisticated look. If the shower's being held at a church, an upscale office or a country club, she should dress to match the setting, but should wear a dress that gives her plenty of room to move and flat, comfortable shoes. She might tuck a flower into her hair, wear a corsage or choose a single eye-catching accessory, like an antique necklace or a glittering pin.
Select business-casual attire, if the new mom feels more comfortable in it. Black dress slacks and a cashmere top and pearls can be very pretty for an informal shower. Choose roomy, comfortable garments; remember, the guest of honor will be sitting or standing for a long time, and while her clothes should be attractive, they must above all be comfortable. Choose ballerina flats or comfortable jeweled sandals, depending on the season.
Allow the expectant mom to wear jeans, if the shower is casual and she prefers them. If the shower's outdoors, includes a barbecue or picnic, or is being held in a park, don't punish her -- and everyone else -- by insisting on formal attire. The point of the event is to celebrate, and she should be free to do that in whatever clothes she likes. A pair of soft white jeans, with a pink or blue cotton tee and a white hat, makes a cute combo for a casual baby shower.
