How to File a Dependent That Worked on a Tax Return

How to File a Dependent That Worked on a Tax Return thumbnail
You can claim your working dependents on your return.

You can claim any person living with you whom you support more than half of the time as a deduction, even if the dependent works. The Internal Revenue Service does not require that a person listed as a dependent be your child; he can be a qualifying relative such as a sibling, parent, niece or nephew. You may not claim anyone as a dependent if that person files a joint income tax return with anyone else. In addition, working dependents must still file their own income tax return; they simply will not be able to claim their own exemption.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain form 1040 from the Internal Revenue Service, any post office or any tax office in your city or town (see Resources). Depending on your tax situation, you might opt to file a 1040A in lieu of a 1040.

    • 2

Start working on your income tax return by entering your personal information and filing status. The next section is your dependent and exemption section, which is where you will list any qualifying dependents.

    • 3

Provide your working dependent's name, social security number and relationship to you. Check the box next to your dependent's name if the dependent is age 17 or younger.

    • 4

Complete your income tax return and mail it to the Internal Revenue Service. The correct address is listed in the instructions for taxpayers.
