How to Replace a Window Switch on the VW TDI

Electric windows have become commonplace on most cars today; however, like any automotive component, they can require replacement over time. The electrical window switches in your TDI Volkswagen are no exception. Luckily, replacing them is an easy and straightforward repair you can take care of yourself in about an hour's time.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Insert a flat head screwdriver between the inner and outer trim pieces on the door handle and pry off the inner trim piece.

  • Spread the inner and outer trim pieces apart with the flat head screwdriver by working apart both the top and bottom parts of the door handle.

  • Pull the inner door trim piece off completely once you have pried it off the outer trim piece.

  • Lift the main handle trim piece directly up to gain access to the window switches.

  • Unclip the wiring harness attached to the window switch panel to remove the window switch panel completely.

  • Push out the defective window switch and replace it with the new one by pushing it into the switch panel, then reinstall the window switch panel and inner and outer door handle trim pieces.
