How to Fix Covered Patio Roof Leaks

Leaks that occur in the roof of your covered patio are repairable depending on the type of material that is used for the roof, such as vinyl. One type of patio roof is a vinyl cover or awning that attaches to the side of your house. When a rip or tear occurs in the vinyl, it will leak and require repair.   • Wash glove
  • Tape measure
  • Vinyl repair kit
  • Scissors
  • Masking tape
  • Vinyl glue
  • Brush
  • Cloth

Instructions

    • 1

      Wash the top of the roof or awning to remove any dirt and residue from the material using a wash glove with soap and water.

      Measure the width and length of the rip or tear with the tape measure and then add 1 to 2 inches to each measurement.

      Cut a section of patch material from the vinyl repair kit to the measurements obtained in step 2 with the scissors.

      Place strips of masking tape around the area of the repair. Apply vinyl glue to the inside of the masked area with the brush. Apply vinyl glue to the cut section of patch material.

      Allow the glue to dry until it becomes tacky to the touch. Place the patch material over the repair area on the patio roof or awning.

      Press on the patch firmly to adhere the glue and remove any air bubbles. Wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use mineral spirits as a solvent to remove any dried glue from the vinyl.
