How to Develop Product Names

A well-named product can help generate more sales. Marketing agencies have people whose job is to come up with unique yet informative product names. If you are creating your own product, developing a name can make or break what you are trying to sell. Making a name for yourself in the entrepreneurial world is tied to making a name for whatever you sell.

Instructions

    • 1

Brainstorm name ideas. Write down all the ideas, and then narrow down the list. Do not think too hard about what you write down or dismiss anything that comes to mind, as this is part of the creative process.

    • 2

Analyze the names you came up with. The name should be easy to pronounce and easy to remember. It should also be linguistically simple and syntactically correct. Names that are too long or hard to pronounce might not fare well.

    • 3

Narrow down the product names that will be most viable on the market. Have three to five names that you will continue to tweak and develop as the finished product name.

    • 4

Take your product names to the street by conducting surveys. Ask family, friends and neighbors which names they find easiest to remember and which ones are too complicated or hard to pronounce.

    • 5

Make sure the name you like is not already in use to avoid copyright infringement; you can do this by contacting the U.S. Copyright Office. Once you have finalized which name you wish to use for your product, you can apply for the copyrights to own the product name so that no one else can use it. You can find the appropriate forms to apply for the copyright on the U.S. Copyright Office's website.
