DIY Outboard Motor Hoist
You can make your own hoist for an outboard motor by utilizing the ceiling in your garage or the storage area for your boat. To do this, you can mount a chain hoist to the ceiling joists. This will allow you to have a dedicated lift to remove the outboard motor from the boat. However, you need to build a foundation support to hang and support the chain hoist.
Things You'll Need
- L-brackets
- Power drill
- Bolts
- Washers
- Nuts
- Socket wrench
- Eye bolt
- Chain hoist
- 2x6 board
- Circular saw
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure the distance between two ceiling joists with a tape measure and note the measurement.
-
2
Transfer the measurement to a 2-by-6 board and make a cut mark with the pencil. Cut the board to the required measurement with a circular saw.
-
-
3
Mount an L-bracket in each corner so that it is flush with the end of the board. Secure the L-brackets to the 2-by-6 board with screws and a power drill.
-
4
Place the 2-by-6 in between the ceiling joists and mark the mounting holes for the L-brackets with the pencil. Drill a hole through the joists with the power drill.
-
5
Align the mounting holes on the L-brackets with the holes on the ceiling joists. Insert a bolt into each hole. Place a washer over the threads on each bolt. Tighten a nut onto the end of each bolt with a socket wrench.
-
6
Drill a hole in the middle of the 2-by-6 board and insert an eye bolt into the hole. Place a washer over the threads on the eye bolt and tighten a nut onto the bolt with the socket wrench.
-
7
Set the support hook for the chain hoist into the eye bolt.
