How to Write an Ode Poem About a Girl thumbnail
Tell the special girl in your life how you love her with an ode written especially about her.

"At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet," wrote Plato, the Greek philosopher, more than 2,000 years ago. Writing poetry to the girl you love, admire or cherish is so much more than words on a paper. She will be enchanted by the touch of love in your written words. An ode is a lyrical poem that is written to exalt and celebrate a person or occasion. In an ode about a girl, while directly addressing the girl in the poetry, her characteristics and beauty are acclaimed.

Make a web of ideas to write about by drawing an oval with the girl's name you are writing about in the middle of a blank sheet of paper. Draw ovals around the girl's name randomly on the paper. Attach the oval to the girl's name by a line. In each of the ovals write an endearing characteristic or special attribute the girl possesses. If you see the qualities are connected, draw a line to attach the ovals. Your paper will end up having criss-crossed lines. That's OK; it's a web. These qualities are the ideas you want to express to the girl in your ode.

Write the first line of your poem by expressing one of the characteristics to praise. Write the first line, and every line as a direct address to the girl you are writing about. Pretend she is in front of you, listening to your words. An ode can vary in the length of its lines; however, each line of poetry needs to be lyrically smooth or pleasing to the ear. Read the line out loud to hear the rhythm of the it. Rewrite the line until it says what you want it to say, and it reads fluidly.

Write another line of poetry which still praises the characteristic mentioned in the first line. Complete the stanza, a group of at least four lines of poetry. Write the remaining lines by elaborating and adding details of the quality mentioned in the first line. In the ode, make at least two of the lines in the stanza rhyme, having the same ending sound. Consult a rhyming dictionary to aid you in finding words that rhyme. To use a rhyming dictionary, look up the ending sound of the word. For example, if you look up the word "share," you look up "air," as that is the last sound in the word.

Choose a different quality from your idea web. Write the first line of the second stanza. Write at least four stanzas highlighting a different characteristic of the girl in each stanza.
