How to Remove a Recessed Lightbulb

It is easy to remove a regular light bulb; just grasp it in your fingers, and unscrew it from the socket. But removing a recessed light bulb can be more challenging. There is usually not enough space between the bulb and the trim to allow you to get your fingers in and grab the bulb. However, there is a special tool for changing recessed light bulbs that can help you accomplish this task without smashing your fingers or the bulb. You can buy this tool at a home improvement store or online.

Things You'll Need

  • Suction cup light bulb changer equipped with extension pole
  • Safety glasses
  • Turn the light off with the light switch.

  • Attach the light-bulb-changing tool to the top of the light bulb by pressing the suction cups of the tool onto the light bulb.

  • Twist the extension pole of the light-bulb-changing tool counter-clockwise until the bulb loosens. Continue twisting until the threads of the bulb exit the threads of the light socket. Remove the bulb from the recessed housing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear a pair of safety glasses to protect your eyes from any falling debris.
