How to Add Games to Steam

Save

Steam is a website and computer program for purchasing and playing games, and it functions as a networking tool for gamers. The Steam client contains a library of the games you have purchased, and it provides a convenient way to launch the games and to easily update them when patches come out. You can even add non-Steam games to your library, which allows your Steam friends to see the other games you're playing, and keeps you from needlessly cluttering your desktop with shortcuts. Whether you want to add Steam games or other games to your library, the process only takes a few steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Steam client
  • Steam account

Adding Steam Games

  • Open the Steam client by double-clicking the icon on the desktop or by clicking the

"Start" button, then "All Programs," then "Steam," then "Steam."

  • Click the "ADD A GAME" button in the lower-left corner of the window.

  • Select "Browse the Steam Store for games."

  • Locate the game you want. You can search for it by typing in the name in the "search the store" text box, or you can drill down by clicking on the genres and featured items.

  • Click "ADD TO CART" when you find the game you want. This takes you to a new page in the Steam client.

  • Click "PURCHASE FOR MYSELF" and continue through the prompts to finalize your purchase. If you do not have a payment method already associated with your account, you will have to add one. After the purchase is complete, your game is automatically added to your library and you can begin downloading it immediately.

Non-Steam Games

  • Open the Steam client by double-clicking the icon on the desktop, or by clicking the Start button, then "All Programs," then "Steam," then "Steam."

  • Click the "ADD A GAME" button in the lower-left corner of the window.

  • Select "Add a Non-Steam Game." This brings up a window within the Steam Client that lists all the programs installed on your computer.

  • Click the check box next to the game or games you wish to add from the list. If you do not see the game on the list, you can add it manually by clicking the "BROWSE" button and navigating to wherever you installed the game, then double-clicking the executable for the game.

  • Click the "ADD SELECTED PROGRAMS" button. Now the game or games are located in your Steam library.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also purchase games at the Steam website listed in Resources. The next time you log in to the Steam client, the game will show up and you can begin downloading it.
