How to Use Naval Jelly on a Heavy Rusted Surface
Naval Jelly's active ingredient is phosphoric acid. This caustic chemical is ideal for cleaning heavily rusted metal surfaces around the home or shop. However, while Naval Jelly is a commonly-used substance, care must be taken when handling phosphoric acid. Wear long clothing and chemical-resistant gloves to avoid burning your skin. An open window and a pair of goggles will protect you from the potentially hazardous fumes. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Brush away any loose flakes of rust with a rag. Don't scrub too hard. Just remove the surface debris. The gel will take care of the rest.

2
Dab a generous layer of the Naval Jelly onto the rusted surface with a paint brush or rag.
-
-
3
Leave the Naval Jelly in place to dissolve the rust for 10 minutes. You must remove the Naval Jelly at 10 minutes. If left on much longer, it may begin to dissolve the metal and leave a pitted surface behind.
-
4
Wipe the Naval Jelly and rust away with a rag. Double bag the soiled rags and paint brush. Fill the bag with dirt, double knot it and label it "Phosphoric Acid." Contact your city's waste disposal department for instructions on how to safely dispose of phosphoric acid in your area.
