Once the Soviets launched Sputnik I, the world's first man-made satellite, on October 4, 1957, the space race was on. The world's attention turned to the Soviets, and America was caught off guard. On July 20, 1969, NASA's Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The first person to touch the moon's surface was Neil A. Armstrong, who took the " one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind." Since the space race, children and adults have been fascinated by space and rockets. Create your small step for mankind by crafting rockets on ordinary canvas sneakers.
Things You'll Need
- Pair of canvas sneakers
- 4-inch rocket rubber stamp
- Black ink stamp pad
- Red fabric marker
- Black fabric marker
- Silver fabric marker
- Glitter glue
Clean your canvas shoes. If they are new, tap the shoes to be sure they are dust free.
Press your rocket rubber stamp onto your black ink stamp pad. Press the inked stamp onto the side of one of your canvas shoes. Repeat on the other side of this shoe and then the two sides of the other shoe. Be sure the stamp picture fits onto your shoe before this step.
Color in the rocket stamp with red and silver fabric markers. Repeat the coloring on all the rocket images.
Draw a circle around one of your rockets with the black marker and fill it in with the black, leaving the rocket alone. This will create space around your rocket, and it will draw the eye to it as well. Repeat this black circle on all of the rockets you made. Wait one hour for the fabric marker to dry.
Squeeze a pea-size amount of glitter glue on the black areas of your black circles. The glitter will be the stars in space. Gently rub the glitter glue with your pointer finger to create the twinkling stars. Add more glitter glue if necessary, and wash your fingers.
Draw a crescent moon on the rubber tip of your shoes with the black marker. Fill it in with the silver marker.
Squeeze a pea-size amount of glitter glue to either side of your moon. Rub gently with your pointer finger to add sparkle. Repeat on the other shoe. Wait for your shoes to dry before wearing them.
Tips & Warnings
- Wear space socks with your rocket shoes for added effect.
- Experiment with different rocket and space images for your shoes. You can also add rockets to leather boots. Use permanent paint markers instead of fabric markers.
- Use markers in a well-ventilated room.
