How to Wire a Ceiling Fan With Three Cables in the Ceiling but Four on the Fan
Wiring ceiling fans can be frustrating if you are unsure of how the wires should connect. Each ceiling fan manufacturer designs and builds products with at least three wires to connect it to three cables in the ceiling. Ceiling fans without a light only have three wires. Ceiling fans with a light, or the ability to install a light, come with four wires. Disconnect the electricity to the three electrical cables in the ceiling by turning off the circuit breaker inside your home's service panel.

Look at the three cables coming from the ceiling and identify the hot, neutral and ground wires. The black wire is the hot wire. The white wire is the neutral wire. The bare copper wire is the ground wire.

Look at ceiling fan and identify the four cables attached at the top of the fan's motor. The black wire is the hot wire. The white wire is the neutral wire. The green wire is the ground wire. The remaining wire is a power supply wire for the ceiling fan's light. Depending on the manufacturer, this wire may be blue or black with a white stripe.

Match the white wire from the ceiling fan to the one in the ceiling. Twist an orange wire connector clockwise onto both white wires to connect them. Connect the bare copper wire from the ceiling with the green wire from the ceiling fan with another orange wire connector.

Connect the final two wires from the ceiling fan-the hot wire for the fan motor and the hot wire for the light-to the black wire from the ceiling by twisting an orange wire connector clockwise onto all three wires. Finish installing the ceiling fan following the manufacturer's directions.

Supply power to the ceiling fan by turning on its circuit breaker inside your home's main service panel.
