Protect exposed scalps using hats and sunscreen.

Any part of your body can become sunburned, including the scalp. According to CNN Health, symptoms of sunburn include pinkness or redness, swelling, pain and tenderness. In severe cases your scalp may break out in fluid-filled blisters that ooze, and you may require professional medical attention. It is important that you take precautions when outdoors to protect your scalp from the damaging effects of sunburn, as it is easier to prevent sunburn than it is to treat it.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. According to CNN Health, that is when the sun's rays are strongest. If you must be out during that time, spend plenty of time in the shade and limit your exposure to direct sunlight.

    • 2

Apply sunscreen to your scalp and other exposed skin before going outdoors. Make sure the sunscreen you use has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Reapply your sunscreen throughout the day if you sweat or have been swimming.

    • 3

Wear a wide-brimmed hat that protects the scalp from direct sunlight. If you choose to wear a baseball cap, be sure to add sunscreen to areas of your body that the hat doesn't cover, like your ears and neck.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your scalp does get sunburned, applying cold, wet rags and taking ibuprofen can alleviate some of the pain.
