Things You'll Need
- The Mustang is a sports/muscle car produced and designed by the Ford Motor Company for nearly fifty years as of January 2011. Most production year Mustang are offered with either a V-6 or a V-8 engine, and the V-8 powered Mustangs are typically accompanied by a dual exhaust system, while V-6 Mustangs typically come with a singly exhaust system. However, a number of companies sell exhaust conversion kits that allow you to upgrade your V-6 Mustang's exhaust system to a dual exhaust configuration.
Instructions
-
-
1
Raise the Mustang to a level that allows you comfortable access to the underside of the vehicle using your jack and jack stands or your hydraulic lift.
-
2
Line up your dual exhaust conversion kit with the brackets that hold your current exhaust in place by simply holding it up underneath the existing system. Mark the section of your current exhaust system where the new exhaust system will terminate when it is installed.
-
-
3
Cut through the existing exhaust system using your cutting tool at the locations identified in Step 2.
-
4
Remove the existing exhaust system by removing the bolts that hold it onto the chassis of the vehicle using your 13mm and 15mm wrenches. Save the bolts you remove for a later step.
-
5
Install the band clamps included with your conversion kit onto the pipes of your new exhaust system.
-
6
Line up the new exhaust system with the bolt holes on the underside of the chassis of your Mustang and connect it to the chassis using the bolts you removed in Step 4. This step is most easily done with an assistant to hold the exhaust in place while you tighten the bolts.
-
7
Tighten the band clamps to connect your new exhaust system to the pipe leading to the engine bay.
-
8
Check the bumper cutouts on the rear of your Mustang to ensure that the exhaust tips are properly aligned. If they are not, loosen the bolts that connect the exhaust to the chassis slightly without removing them and adjust the positioning of the exhaust system. Use an assistant for this step and do not stand underneath the exhaust system while loosening the bolts, as the exhaust may come lose and fall on you.
