How to Spectate at the New York City Marathon

Spectating at the New York City Marathon is almost as memorable as running it. More than 2 million spectators line the streets of the five boroughs to view the 30,000 runners - from world-class athletes to joggers.

  1. Step 1

    Avoid the start. In any event, spectators are not allowed on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, or any bridge along the course.

  2. Step 2

    Try Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn. This is about the longest stretch of the course, and you'll have lots of local company.

  3. Step 3

    Head to the best spots in Queens. That's 51st Street, and 44th Drive from Vernon to Crescent Street.

  4. Step 4

    Remember the Bronx. The best place to be in this borough is on 138th Street from Alexander Avenue to Third Avenue.

  5. Step 5

    Enjoy the race in Manhattan. You can see the event on First Avenue, from 59th Street to 115th Street.

  6. Step 6

    Go to Central Park. The best locations are 90th Street and Fifth Avenue, 82nd Street on the East Drive and along the East Drive from 70th Street to 65th Street.

  7. Step 7

    Watch the drama of the final miles on Central Park South from Fifth Avenue to Columbus Circle.

  8. Step 8

    Avoid the finish line at the Tavern on the Green. But if you feel you must, you'll need to arrive there at about 10:30 a.m. to reserve a spot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring orange slices, extra clothing or signs to greet friends and fellow runners. Make sure to tell friends exactly where you will meet them.
  • Consider using the subway. It's a fun adventure, and you can see the race in at least several locations.
  • Cheer for the disabled runners. The wheelchair racers go by first, and in the crowd will be other disabled athletes and their escorts.
  • Get involved. You can run or walk, or volunteer, for regular, year-round events. Contact Marathon organizers the New York Road Runners Club, headquartered in Manhattan.
  • Check out the race on television (consult your local listings) or on the Internet.
