How to Lower the Rear End on a 1992 Chevy Dually

The 1992 Chevrolet dually is designed to tow mammoth loads in both the bed and behind the truck. As such, the rear of the truck sits higher than the front, so that when the truck is loaded down with cargo it lowers down and becomes level. If you don't like that look and you want to lower the rear end of your dually, you can do so with a few basic parts and a little bit of time.

Things You'll Need

  • Heavy-duty jack
  • Heavy-duty jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Open-end wrench set
  • 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Lowering shackle

Instructions

    • 1

Park the dually on a level surface, set the parking brake, and put the wheel chocks around the front wheels. Lift up the rear of the truck with the heavy-duty jack, and put the heavy-duty jack stands underneath the axle and the frame of the dually.

    • 2

Unbolt the rear of the leaf spring from the leaf spring shackle using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench, then unbolt the shackle from the leaf spring hanger using the same tools. Remove the shackle from the suspension.

    • 3

Install the lowering shackle onto the leaf spring with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Install the other end of the lowering shackle into the leaf spring hanger using the same tools.

    • 4

Lower the rear end of the dually off of the heavy-duty jack stands using the heavy-duty jack. Take the wheel chocks off of the wheels.
