How to Remove Rusted Snowmobile Studs

Snowmobiles, are susceptible to rusting because of their (naturally) frequent exposure to moisture. Studs are generally an optional accessory on a snowmobile. They improve traction on snow and ice and give a driver more control, but can also limit the useable life of the snowmobile, due to greater wear and tear. If you decide to remove the studs from the snowmobile you can do it yourself with a few tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Elevate the back of the snowmobile to gain access to the track stand.

    • 2

Scrape off the surface rust of the nuts and bolts holding the studs in place with a steel wool pad.

    • 3

Apply mineral oil to the nuts and bolts to soften the rust. Leave the oil on for about 15 minutes.

    • 4

Use the socket wrench to turn the bolt counterclockwise. This removes the nut.

    • 5

Pull away the support plate holding the stud. Then pull the stud out of the track.

    • 6

Repeat steps 2 to 5 to remove every stud.
