How to Download Patches for the PS3

PlayStation 3 software is constantly being patched and updated by Sony, and some new games require a certain version of the system software to run properly. You can patch the system online through the console, or you can download the patches using a PC. If you lack Internet access, you can patch the system by using a new game disc. Keeping your PlayStation 3 software up to date can fix issues such as freezing and glitches in certain games.

Things You'll Need

  • Game disc
  • Wireless controller
  • USB cable
  • PC with Internet access
  • USB flash drive
  • Insert a game disc that has the latest update. All PS3 games come with the version of the system patch that was available when they were released. Inserting a newly released game will patch the PS3 automatically.

  • Download the patch through the PS3's main menu if your PS3 is connected to the Internet. Power on the console, then select "Settings", "System Update" and "Update via Internet." It will download the patch through the network connection.

  • Download the patch using a Windows PC and a USB flash drive. Plug the flash drive into one of the computer's USB ports. Click the "Start" button and select "Computer" or "My Computer," depending on your Windows version.

  • Double-click the icon for the flash drive in the window that pops up. Right-click inside the window, then click on "New Folder." Name the folder "PS3" and hit "Enter."

  • Double-click on the "PS3" folder, then click again and click "New Folder." Name the folder "UPDATE," in all capital letters. If the name is not in caps, the PS3 will not recognize it.

  • Download the "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file (see Resources) and save it in the UPDATE folder on the flash drive.

  • Remove the flash drive from the computer and plug it into the PS3's USB port. From the system's main menu, select "Settings," "System Update" and "Update via Storage Media." When prompted, press the "X" button on the controller to begin the update.

Tips & Warnings

  • The flash drive must have at least 165 MB of free space to download the PS3UPDAT.PUP file.
  • You can check the version of the system software in the PS3 by going to "Settings," "System settings" and "System Information."
  • When the update is in progress, the "Power" button on the console is disabled. Don't unplug the PS3 while it is updating, or the console may be damaged.
