How to Sell Rubies

How to Sell Rubies thumbnail
Typically, dark red rubies are more valuable than lighter stones.

Rubies, prized for their beautiful color, can range in hue from blood red to light pink. A relative of the sapphire, quality rubies can sell for a good price. For non-jewelers, selling gemstones sometimes seems intimidating. However, with a little research and effort, you can sell your rubies without worry. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Do some research on gemstones in general. Having some knowledge goes a long way, especially in dealing with jewelers and other professionals. At the minimum, be sure you understand the four Cs -- carat weight, cut, clarity, and color (see Resources).

    • 2

Get the rubies appraised. Take the time to find a quality appraiser (see Resources) and get the rubies' statistics and estimated value in writing.

    • 3

Decide on the appropriate venue to sell the rubies. Jewelers will often buy smaller stones, or you can list them on an auction website. For more valuable rubies, consider an upscale auction house.

    • 4

Monitor and update your sales listings frequently. Make sure to display the rubies to show off their color and cut, and answer any questions your potential buyers may have.
