How to Use Emerging Technologies in the Classroom

In times past, classrooms were simple and technology light, consisting of little but a chalkboard and some battered textbooks. Today's classrooms hold few similarities to these antiquated predecessors. In many contemporary classrooms, technology is widely used and students are engaged in technology-rich learning on a nearly daily basis. Integrating emerging technologies into your classroom is an effective way to keep your students on the cutting edge and ensure that they leave your room ready to face 21st century challenges.

Instructions

    • 1

Train yourself and others in emerging technologies. Teachers will likely be hesitant to use technologies that they don't fully understand. To ensure that you and other teachers in your building feel comfortable using technology regularly, seek individual training or plan full-staff professional development in which you explore new technologies.

    • 2

Integrate technology of some type into every lesson. Do not rely completely on one technology type, but instead use an assortment of technologies regularly. By doing so, you ensure that your classroom is constantly changing and your technology usage excites and captivates your pupils.

    • 3

Monitor student comprehension to determine which technologies prove most effective. As you quiz students on classroom material comprehension, use the results to determine which technology options prove most effective in educating your students. If you find that some technologies are more effective than others, use these options more frequently than the less effective ones.

    • 4

Equip students with digital technologies. Provide students with eReaders and MP3 players for classroom use whenever possible. By doing so, you encourage them to become familiar with and embrace technology.

    • 5

Assign technology-rich projects. Trade the traditional poster-making activity for creating a digital slideshow and giving an in-class presentation for recording a digital movie. Technology-rich projects are often more exciting to students, and they also ensure that as students complete their projects they become more comfortable with the use of technology.

    • 6

Connect your students with others around the world using technology. Use email, visual and chatting technologies to communicate with other students around the globe. Students will likely be eager to hear what their peers in other countries are doing, and connecting them via technology makes this communication inexpensive and rapid.
